Making Changes that Last
There is no shortage of people who will tell you what a well life looks like, what you need to be healthy, even what your best life looks like.
And yet, wellness is an interesting concept that means something different to everyone. Maybe you want to lose weight, maybe you want to get fitter, perhaps you are trying to manage a chronic illness as well.
What most people want is a sense of overall wellness. What does that really mean and why is it important? A sense of purpose, being in control, vitality – it is different for everyone.
Put simply, having a sense of wellness is being the best you CHOOSE to be.
Want to know how to get there once and for all?
Here are the crucial guideposts:
⇒ Accept where you are right now.
⇒ Work out what you want, create a vision of where you want to go. Go beyond the superficial.
⇒ Spend as much time as necessary working out why it is important to you.
It should look something like, I would like ….. so that ……, so that…… and keep going until you really feel it. The you have got to what and why.
⇒ Reflect on what is getting in the way. Why aren’t you there already?
⇒ Map out some three-month goals. Three is a good number to aim for. These goals should really focus on the behaviours you want to change.
A good starting point – In three months’ time I will be doing …..
⇒ Break those goals down further into what can I do next week to put me on the path towards my vision.
These become tasks, specific actions that you will take in the next week that will move you towards your overall vision. A good rule of thumb is that these should be specific enough to schedule it in your diary (and it’s a great idea to do this right away).
So, when you are in that state of overwhelm and you know that something has to change in your life. Take a moment to check the guideposts above and begin making some lasting changes to your life.
