Detox Principles – the why and how

Are you wondering if you need to detox?

If you are on the internet and searching for health-related articles, chances are you have come across the term detox.

Detoxification is a normal metabolic process in which the environmental and dietary toxins are removed from your body via your liver, kidneys, bowel etc. Depending on your genetic makeup, it works better in some people than others,

You can wind up with some serious health issues, when your organs get overloaded due to repeated exposure to various toxins.

  • By way of diet (think gluten, preservatives, additives), or
  • Environment (cigarette smoke, herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals)

And, your ability to process and eliminate those toxins is compromised.

In my case, I wound up with severe eczema all over my face and neck.  It was embarrassing, painful and frightening and it took a long time to heal myself.  Detoxifying, was part of my journey.  My hair analysis revealed an extremely high heavy metal (particularly mercury) overload.  DNA analysis showed my natural ability to process toxins is compromised by my genetic makeup. I had the double whammy of overburden and resistance.  My journey has been a long one and to this day, I am still working on eliminating heavy metals from my system.

That said, there are some simple principles you can follow that will reduce your toxic exposure immediately and begin you on the path towards healing.

Eat a plant-based diet

⇒More fruit, vegetables, nuts, herbs, spices, seeds

Lower Animal Fat consumption

⇒But eat moderate amounts of the plant-based fats like olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, nuts

Eat wholefoods

⇒Minimise processed, refined or packaged foods that contain preservatives, chemicals, artificial sweeteners and fillers.

Go gluten and dairy free

⇒Especially if you have any skin conditions already like eczema or psoriasis. These are the two most common allergens. They increase inflammation in the body.

Lower your fructose

⇒Fresh fruit is OK as it has the fibre with it to aid digestion. Try to eliminate foods sweetened with fructose or corn syrup (in most packaged, gluten free foods). Be wary of too many “paleo” friendly treats.  There are a lot of dates typically used to sweeten paleo food naturally.  Dried fruit really concentrates the fructose load and if you are detoxing, this will overburden your system and may cause digestive issues in sensitive individuals.

Eat organic as much as possible

⇒You will reduce your exposure to herbicides and pesticide residues which can impact on how your cells function. Did you know that those pre-packed baby spinach and lettuce bags you buy at the supermarket are washed in a mix of chlorine and water?  Organic produce gets an extra rinse.  Wash it again when you get it home, especially if you have filtered, chlorine free water available.

Check your food preparation, storage and cooking methods

⇒Eliminate (as much as practical) any toxic load you are adding from how you handle your food. Think glass and steel storage containers, don’t burn your food, steam and sauté to cook as a start.
